Floods after drought: 40 dead after heavy rain in Somalia Now Putin wants to strike from the stratosphere

More than forty people have died in Somalia as a result of persistent heavy rainfall. In the town of Beledwayne, in the center of the country on the Horn of Africa, the Schabelle River overflowed its banks on Wednesday evening, taking with it twelve people, including five children.

The mayor of Beledwayne, Nadar Tabah, told the German news agency. A few days earlier, aid organization Care had already reported at least 29 deaths.

According to Care, almost 350,000 people have been left homeless by the floods. Many areas are not accessible to aid organizations and emergency services. It was said that around 1.2 million people were affected by the floods.

At the same time, the impoverished country is suffering from one of the worst droughts in decades. Before the massive rainfall, there had been no rain for five consecutive periods. According to the UN, more than a third of Somalia’s population, 6.6 million people, do not have enough to eat. Such climate extremes “will keep hunger in Somalia at record levels,” the World Food Program warned.

According to the UN, millions of people in other countries in northeast Africa – such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and South Sudan – are also at risk of hunger. In addition to unprecedented drought in some parts of the region and flooding in other parts of the region, the crisis is also caused by conflicts such as the recent power struggle in Sudan, the aftermath of the corona pandemic, the threat of Islamist terrorists and outbreaks of cholera and other diseases .
