There is no end to the negative headlines surrounding America’s opposition Republicans. On Tuesday, a Republican representative accused House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, 58, who was impeached in October, of elbowing him in the kidneys. Meanwhile, a conservative senator challenged an invited witness to a fight during a congressional hearing.

In the first incident, Representative Tim Burchett, 59, accused fellow party member McCarthy of elbowing him in the back as he walked by in a congressional hallway during an interview.

Elbow kick to the kidneys

“I got elbowed in the back and I wasn’t prepared for it because it was a kick in the kidneys,” the right-wing hardliner, one of eight Republicans who voted for McCarthy’s impeachment in early October, told the news channel CNN . “I turned around and there was Kevin.” He ran after the former ‘speaker’, leading to a verbal altercation.

McCarthy denied this story to reporters, claiming he did not hit Burchett. Rep. Matt Gaetz, 41, who filed the motion for McCarthyy’s removal in the budget policy dispute, filed a complaint with the House Ethics Committee.

Invitation to fight

Meanwhile, there was another incident during a hearing in the Senate: conservative Senator Markwayne Mullin (46) from the state of Oklahoma challenged union leader Sean M. O’Brien (51) to a fight. Mullin read out an earlier tweet in which O’Brien called him a “clown” and wrote, “Stop playing the tough guy in Senate hearings.” You know where to find me. Anywhere, anytime, cowboy.”

The senator and former martial artist then said that they could now ‘finish’ the issue as “adults”. When O’Brien responded, “That’s okay, perfect,” Mullin stood up and gestured for him to take off his wedding ring as if he were in for a fight.

Commission Chairman Bernie Sanders immediately intervened and asked O’Brien to sit back down. “You’re a United States Senator.” Mullin and O’Brien continued their war of words despite Sanders’ attempts to calm the situation. (AFP)
