Lose weight quickly without giving up sweets: that is the tempting promise of the German nutritional supplement company More Nutrition. The brand is especially successful on Tiktok and Instagram and is promoted by influencers – sometimes with absurd promises that are not fulfilled at all. The bitter truth: there is an insidious advertising trick behind it.
More Nutrition has 700,000 followers on Instagram. Since its founding in 2017, the company has also onboarded numerous influencers with an even greater reach. For example, YouTuber Rezo (31), influencer chef Stefano Zarrella (32) and fitness influencers such as Paula Döringer promote the alleged miracle cures. But mere mortals don’t miss it either: More advertises that anyone can be part of the “family”.
Boom generates millions in turnover
This is a potential goldmine, especially for influencers with smaller communities. Because the nutritional supplement business is booming. More Nutrition feels that too. What started as a small company six years ago has now grown into a multi-million dollar company.
So everything is perfect? Not at all! Journalists from the investigative format “Ctrl_F” and “ZDF Magazin Royale” spoke with several people affected, including employees and customers of More Nutrition, as well as influencers. In their stories, the image of the apparently perfect company is seriously damaged. Experts are also asked about individual More Nutrition products. Your conclusion is also damning.
Language rules for influencers
More Nutrition makes its money by selling nutritional supplements. Legally, this is food and not medicine. For healthy people who eat a balanced diet, the means are actually unnecessary. Nevertheless, they are gobbled up by millions of people hoping to get the body of their dreams.
At More Nutrition, the ‘More Essentials’, capsules containing various vitamins, are particularly popular. Explosive: Although the ‘Essentials’ packaging recommends taking two capsules, many influencers advertise that they take eight capsules, one even seventeen, at a time. They do it all with a big smile on their face.
However, the influencers are hiding something important: what they say in their videos is all done according to a strictly regulated script. In an influencer guide, More Nutrition notes which words and phrases should and should not be used to promote their products on social media. Expressions such as ‘It helps against…’ or ‘It is good for…’ should be avoided. Instead, ‘may/might’ should always be used when talking about the health benefits of the capsules.
Drug-free thanks to More product
This even goes so far that an influencer claims that thanks to the medicine ‘Curcu-More’ with curcumin as the main ingredient, she can live without medication despite her intestinal disease. A miracle cure? Nutritionist and pharmacologist Martin Smollich has his doubts. “What exactly happens in our body has not yet been proven in studies,” he tells “STRG_F”. There is a lot of data from animal and cell experiments. But: “The overall research shows that there is no evidence that curcumin really has health benefits.”
According to Smollich, some products and their ingredients can even have serious consequences for the body. The ‘Chunky Flavors’, which are popular with customers and are flavor powders that can be mixed into yogurt or cake batter, for example, contain the sweetener sucralose. “When sucralose is heated above 120 degrees, it disintegrates, and these breakdown products are carcinogenic in animal studies,” Smollich warns.
The nutritionist is not the only one who expresses doubts about the “stories” of More Nutrition. There are now more and more critical voices against the company on social media.
Threats against critics
For example, influencer Luca Negri has repeatedly criticized More Nutrition and founder Christian Wolf (28) in his videos. It wasn’t long before Negri received an anonymous, threatening phone call. He was asked to remove the critical videos. It is not clear who ordered the man to intimidate Negri.
Negri is not alone with his experiences. A blogger also reports threatening messages from the same number as Luca Negri. Chance? At More Nutrition you reject any connection. Wolf, who recently withdrew completely from operational activities after further accusations, also makes it clear that he did not direct anyone to make the threatening phone calls or send messages.
