An ankle monitor and two bailiffs at his side couldn’t stop him: As soon as he left his cell, Aleksandr Perepelenko (43) seized his chance and ran away. Now the police in Germany are intensively searching for the convicted murderer. So far without success. The researchers now assume that the 43-year-old is no longer in Germany. The search is now underway throughout Europe. “We will do everything we can to arrest him again,” a police spokesperson told SWR.
But how did the double murderer escape so easily? According to police and prosecutors, Perepelenko was taken from prison in Bruchsal in Rhineland-Palatinate state on Monday “as part of a planned execution near a quarry lake” near Germersheim. There he would meet his wife and their children.
For security reasons, he was given an ankle monitor and was accompanied by two bailiffs. But he managed to escape around 1 p.m. Perepelenko took off and ran into a nearby forest. The anklet was found in the city of Germersheim shortly after the escape. A search was immediately started, which included the presence of a helicopter and a police dog unit. There was no point.
The public was not informed until a day after the escape
According to the prison director, there have been no problems with Perepelenko so far. As part of such a measure, he has already been allowed to leave his cell eight times. But now he has been stormed. The man was convicted of murder in 2012 and has since been serving a life sentence. He tied up his victim († 44), beat him and eventually strangled him. Not his first act. He had already killed someone and had already spent several years in prison for manslaughter, ‘Bild’ reported.
It is unclear exactly how Perepelenko was able to escape. The authorities keep a low profile so as not to give other convicts the wrong idea. According to the Public Prosecution Service, there is no danger to the population. Therefore, the public was not informed until the day after the escape. Yet it does not seem entirely harmless. Anyone who sees the fleeing double murderer should immediately call the police and not speak to him.
Perepelenko was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans and gray and red sneakers. Police say he is 6 feet tall, has a strong, athletic figure and is bald. (ymh)
