In the cult ’80s comedy “Throw Mommy Out of the Train!” Danny DeVito took a funny look at the Hitchcock classic ‘The Stranger on the Train’. As director and lead actor, he played a mama’s boy who mistakenly thinks his acting teacher (played by Billy Crystal) has proposed him a deal. He kills the teacher’s ex-wife in exchange for his annoying mother…
The misunderstanding leads to all kinds of complications and twists, especially when the ex-wife is thought to be dead. The comedy was extremely well received at the box office. Anne Ramsey, also known for her portrayal of Mama Fratelli in ‘The Goonies’, was even nominated for an Oscar for the role of DeVito’s mother (see image of our article). Now suddenly a sequel is coming – almost forty years after the original was released in cinemas in North America in 1987 and then in Germany in 1988.
After mom we throw dad off the train!
First, Danny DeVito chatted with the magazine in an interview hence he and Crystal on an earlier date had developed a sequel – logical title: “Throw daddy off the train“, i.e. “Throw daddy out of the train!”. In the interview it sounded like this had been an idea before. But that is not the case.
How As we have heard, the two acting stars and Freude are still determined to get the sequel off the ground. A Crystal representative confirmed the plans to the magazine: The duo continued to work on the project.
Whether and when ‘Throw Papa From the Train’ will actually be released is still up in the air. DeVito, who has had success for years with the critically acclaimed series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, was recently back in German cinemas with “Ghost Villa”. The fantasy comedy can now even be streamed on Disney+. Billy Crystal, on the other hand, has been rare on German cinema screens for years. Most recently, the comedy ‘Here Today’, which he also directed, was released on Netflix this spring.
