“We are very concerned about this forced displacement of people, many of whom are very likely refugees,” Guterres spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in New York on Wednesday (local time).
Asked whether Guterres had not asked the Pakistani government to withdraw the order to deport refugees without residence permits after the end of October, the spokesman said: “We would like them not to go through with it.” In many ways, Afghanistan is unwilling to readmit its population. Dujarric referred to the humanitarian and human rights situation in the country controlled by the Islamist Taliban.
According to government figures, about 4.4 million Afghan refugees recently resided in Pakistan, 1.7 million of whom were without valid papers. Afghans make up the bulk of illegal migrants in the country. Tens of thousands of Afghans have already left Pakistan under the pressure of threatened deportation. (SDA)
