The deaths were “a direct result of Israel’s illegal actions against the people of Gaza,” a South African Foreign Ministry statement said on Monday.

Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor called for an “immediate ceasefire” and the “immediate opening of a humanitarian corridor.” South Africa also called on the United Nations to set up a special force to protect Palestinian civilians from further bombing.

As one of the most economically powerful and modern countries in Africa, South Africa is considered a role model and mouthpiece for many countries on the continent. South Africa also enjoys influence on the continent through its long-standing membership of the Brics group of key emerging countries – along with Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Terrorists attacked Israel on October 7 on behalf of Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, carrying out massacres and taking at least 239 hostages, according to the Israeli army. Israel responded to this with, among other things, a military operation in the coastal area. The goal is to destroy Hamas’ military capabilities, end its rule and bring the hostages home. Israel accuses Palestinian militants of using civilians as human shields. (SDA)
