US President Joe Biden met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Washington. Biden emphasized in the conversation that the US and China must work together to tackle global challenges, the Whites said on Friday after the meeting. The meeting between the two could indicate that Chinese party leader Xi Jinping could travel to the Asia-Pacific summit in San Francisco, California, in mid-November – and a face-to-face meeting between Biden and Xi could be scheduled there.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is currently visiting Washington; he previously met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. He in turn visited China in June and met Chinese President Xi. Blinken was the highest-ranking US visitor to China since Biden’s term began in January 2021.
Relations between China and the US have been at a low point recently. The world’s largest and second largest economies have long been at loggerheads over many key issues. Xi and Biden last met in person about a year ago on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia. In the conversation with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Biden emphasized that China and the US must communicate openly.
