The boys and girls were allowed to tour with him through the crowd of many thousands of worshipers who had gathered in front of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The children waved around in a friendly manner, following the example of the Pope. Some also took the opportunity to take souvenir photos with their mobile phones.

The Popemobile – from the Italian words papa (pope) and auto (car) – is the name given to the vehicles the Pope uses during his public appearances. The term became popular during the term of John Paul II (1978-2005). The Popes now always have a Popemobile with them when they travel abroad.
