Every year, October 25th is International Pasta Day!

Mistakes continue to happen, even in something as simple as cooking pasta. It would be so easy. With just a few tips and tricks, you can make your pasta taste like it does in Italy.

The most common mistakes when making pasta

1. There is too little salt in the cooking water

This is perhaps the biggest mistake you can make. If you do not properly salt the pasta cooking water, the pasta will taste completely bland later. You can salt the water accordingly. Taste the cooking water. If it tastes almost salty, it’s perfect for pasta.

2. Fat in cooking water

In the past, it was often recommended to add a high-quality oil to the pasta cooking water. This should ensure that the pasta does not stick together. The oil in the cooking water is not only a waste of oil, but unfortunately it also ensures that the sauce does not stick to the pasta later. But that’s exactly what’s important in a good pasta dish. There are other solutions to prevent pasta from sticking together in the pot: Get a large enough pot and gently stir the pasta over and over as it cooks. This ensures that the pasta does not stick together.

3. Put the pasta in boiling water

Pasta is always added to the pot while the water is boiling. If you put the pasta in cold water, it will become soft and melt. Moreover, they stick to each other so strongly that it is impossible for them to be al dente.

4. Cook pasta too long or too short

Always pay attention to the advice on the package. Different types of pasta have different cooking times. As a general rule, pasta should be cooked for approximately eight to ten minutes. If you’re not sure, remove a noodle from the pot and try it. The pasta should not be completely soft yet because it will still sag a bit in the strainer and along with the sauce.

5. Drain the pasta water

After draining the pasta and putting it back into the pot to mix with the sauce, you should definitely add a few spoons of pasta water. This provides a special creaminess. The sauce combines well with the pasta and does not stick together.

6. Rinse the pasta

Never rinse pasta with cold water. This will remove starch from the pasta and prevent the sauce from sticking well to the pasta. When you drain the pasta and put it in the pan to mix with the sauce, be sure to add a few spoonfuls of pasta water first.
