Michael Cohen, the former US president of US President Donald Trump, has testified against his former employer in a fraud case in New York. According to US media reports, Trump blankly followed the lawyer’s statement in the Manhattan court on Tuesday and has consulted with his legal team from time to time.
Cohen repeated statements he had previously made that Trump had hired him to make his company’s assets appear higher than they actually were. Before the day of the trial began, Trump described Cohen as a “proven liar,” and Cohen called it a “very special reunion.”
Key key witness in other Trump lawsuits
The fraud trial concerns allegations by the Public Prosecution Service that the ex-president, his sons and associates manipulated the value of the Trump Organization for years to obtain cheaper loans and insurance contracts. Republican Trump is not threatened with a prison sentence or a direct impact on his presidential candidacy, but a conviction could cause him major business damage.
Cohen had worked for Trump for more than a decade and was a central figure in several cases involving the Republican. He was often described as Trump’s “cleaner” – until a rift between the two occurred.
The lawyer is also a key witness in the prosecution against Trump in connection with hush money payments. Cohen has confessed that he paid $130,000 in hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels to prevent her from speaking out about her alleged affair with Trump during the 2016 election campaign. Cohen was ultimately sentenced to three years in prison, but was allowed to leave due to the corona pandemic serve part of the sentence under house arrest. Trump sued Cohen a few months ago for $500 million for allegedly violating his legal duties. (SDA)
