According to the French Minister of Transport, the false bomb threats against airports in France came from an email address in Switzerland. According to the Federal Office of Justice (BJ), France has not yet requested legal assistance from Bern.
At the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, the Federal Office of Justice in Bern said on Monday that no request for legal assistance had been received from France. However, it cannot be ruled out that the French authorities acted in another way, namely through administrative assistance in police matters.
The Federal Police Office (Fedpol) in turn emphasized that these cases fall under the jurisdiction of the French authorities. It does not comment on criminal proceedings initiated by other authorities.
Verification of addresses
In general, Fedpol checks email addresses whose providers are located in Switzerland. Fedpol mainly acts at the request of foreign police forces. The fact that a provider is based in Switzerland does not mean that the IP address and sender of an email are also located in Switzerland.
As a guest on the program ‘Questions politiques’ on the French channels France inter, France TV and Le Monde, French Transport Minister Clément Beaune said on Sunday that almost 70 false bomb threats have been made against French airports since last Wednesday. Most were sent from “the same email address in Switzerland”.
France has raised the alert level against attacks to the highest level since teacher Dominique Bernard was murdered at a secondary school in Arras on October 13 by a young man who claimed responsibility for the Islamic State terrorist organization.
Police soldier patrols and Operation Sentinelle have been increased, as have the number of officers at train stations and airports. (sda)
