A huge white mass washed up on a beach in Papua New Guinea.

On the beach in Papua New Guinea, a slimy, white mass poses puzzles. The strange creature apparently came from the depths of the ocean and washed up. The mass suggests a tail fin and is reminiscent of a mermaid. Photos show the creature is larger than a human. Before researchers could collect a DNA sample, residents buried the creature on the remote volcanic island of Simberi Island. This is what the research magazine ‘Live Science’ writes.

The rubbery carcasses, also called ‘globsters’, could ultimately only be assessed from photographs. Scientists agree that it is a sea vacuum cleaner. Researcher Helene Marsh tells LiveScience: “Everything else is pure speculation.”

Is it a whale?

Because: Because the globster no longer has any innards, the creature cannot be identified. The animal has been dead for several weeks, which means the decomposition process is already advanced.

“It looks like a badly decomposed whale,” said marine mammal specialist Sascha Hooker. “At first I thought it was a big shark,” said marine biologist Gregory Skomal. He adds: “Now that I have looked at the animal more closely, I am more confident that it is a whale because of the shape of the tail and the position of the pectoral fins.” According to researcher Erich Hoyt, it could also be a visual cow.

However, what lies behind the Globster and how the creature died remains one of the many mysteries of the ocean. (jwg)
