Danger of parking for wild animals: the cantonal council of Zurich wants to release many parking spaces

The canton of Zurich still has many free parking spaces. The government council does not want to change that. (symbol image)

MPs from De Groenen, SP and GLP had called on the canton to make the larger parking facilities taxable. This is only the case in just over a quarter.

The council rejected the postulate at Monday’s meeting by a vote of 92 to 73, following the ruling council’s position. In his statement he stated that the number of paid parking spaces at Laufen Castle and the Rhine Falls would increase by 620 in any case. This means that approximately half of the total of approximately 2,800 cantonal places would be taxable.

There shouldn’t be more for the time being. The government council fears that otherwise there would be a risk of wild animals parking in rural areas. Moreover, the management and control effort would exceed the yield of small or poorly used systems.

Sonja Rueff-Frenkel (FDP, Zurich) did not want to support the ‘fight against the car’. René Isler (SVP, Winterthur) stated that most parking spaces in the canton are managed by the municipalities. You must contact them.

The postulants were disappointed in the government council. Thomas Schweizer (Greens, Hedingen) wanted a concept for management. Andreas Hasler (GLP, Illnau-Effretikon) emphasized that this does not apply to all systems, but only to larger systems and systems with “high parking pressure”. (SDA)
