Heavy storms have caused power outages, road closures and school closures in the south of France. The Alpes Maritimes department warned on Friday of heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour.

Landslides and fallen trees made roads impassable and the beach promenade in Nice was closed due to high waves. The weather service Météo France has issued the highest severe weather warning level for the region, red. As a precaution, all schools and kindergartens remained closed on Friday.

About 250 people have been brought to safety, but no one has been injured so far, said the department’s prefect, Hugues Moutouh, 55. Hundreds of firefighters were present. Of particular concern were three mountain valleys where it was feared that rivers would overflow their banks and water and mud would cause serious damage. (SDA)
