On Friday, an Islamist-radicalized young man killed a teacher with a knife and seriously injured three other people at a high school in Arras, northern France.
Against the backdrop of the attack and the current situation in the Middle East, France has imposed the highest terror alert level. In particular, this allows the exceptional mobilization of resources and the dissemination of information that can protect citizens in a crisis situation.
The 20-year-old perpetrator is from Chechnya and is said to have shouted ‘God is great’ in Arabic during his attack. Police were able to neutralize the attacker with a Taser and arrest him. According to media reports, several relatives of the attacker were also taken into custody.
Brother planned an attack on the presidential palace
As the newspaper ‘Le Parisien’ reported with reference to the authorities, the attacker’s older brother was arrested in 2019 for preparing an attack on the French presidential palace and sentenced to prison as a member of a terrorist organization.
The attack took place almost three years after the fatal attack on history teacher Samuel Paty. The 47-year-old was killed by an attacker on October 16, 2020, in a Paris suburb and then beheaded. (SDA/obf)
