“The point is to support regional defense plans with concrete forces,” Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Brussels on Thursday.

We are talking, among other things, of 35,000 soldiers at a high or highest level of readiness and as many as 200 aircraft, frigates, corvettes and much more. The troops must be able to be requested from 2025 by the Supreme Commander of NATO Forces in Europe (Saceur). “We are actually going all-in,” said Pistorius. This is especially true for key military support capabilities, such as logistics.

Germany’s commitment comes as part of NATO’s planning for a new force model. The aim is to keep 300,000 soldiers alert for possible NATO missions in the future. So far, the NRF intervention force has mainly been deployed for rapid crisis operations. The Member States currently make approximately 40,000 soldiers available for this purpose.

The background to the reshuffle is mainly the threats from Russia. Since Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin ordered the attack on Ukraine, NATO has no longer completely ruled out taking action against alliance states. The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are considered particularly endangered.

Just in case, a decision was already made in the summer on the regional defense plans. More than 4,400 pages specify how to protect and defend critical places in the Alliance area in the event of an emergency. The implementation must be made possible by the new armed forces model.
