Dorothy Hoffner was 104 years old when she fell. Her fall lasted a full seven minutes. And when she finally landed, she was… a world record holder. You can discover the whole story in the video here:
Hoffner lives in Chicago, Illinois. The senior, who will reach the proud age of 105 in December, is making the most of her final years. On October 1, she exchanged her walker for a parachute and dared to jump from a dizzying height. She replaced 103-year-old Linnéa Ingegärd Larsson of Sweden as the world record holder, becoming the oldest person to skydive. Larsson didn’t break the record until May 2022 itself.
Not her first jump – and maybe not the last either…
Hoffner once jumped out of a plane at the age of 100. Or rather, she was pushed. That was her first skydive. This time it was very important for her to be able to give the impetus herself, she said. And she did. Once the plane reached the correct altitude, she – hanging from her tandem partner’s harness – pitched towards the open hatch and jumped, as the videos show.
Seven minutes later the two landed on the ground unharmed; the plane was still in front of them. A number of spectators and many reporters were already waiting for them and applauding. After the parachute was exchanged for a walker, she asked herself questions. How does it feel to be a world record holder now? “Like I was old!” replied the old man. And promised, among other things, that this might not be her last skydive. (lso)
