The STV athletes achieved historic successes at the World Championships in Antwerp: 5th place in the team classification, 8th place for Noe Seifert in the all-round competition. The last time that happened was in the 1950s.
For David Huser (36), head of top sport at STV, the successes come as no surprise. «We knew the athletes were in good shape and we were well prepared. But it would be presumptuous to say we expected fifth place.”
Negative headlines en masse
The successes are a balm for the battered soul of the STV, which has been repeatedly criticized for more than three years, when Blick and the NZZ made public the grievances in rhythmic gymnastics, causing a media earthquake. No stone was left unturned within the association, the management team was completely replaced and a system change was initiated.
The media senses a scandal behind everything that has happened in Magglingen since then. It is of little importance that the job is done well. That is why Huser, who has been in charge since the summer of 2021, begrudges the successes not only to the athletes and coaches, but also to the many STV employees at the headquarters in Aarau and the gymnastics club members across the country. “The constant negative headlines are not always easy for them.”
The process of change continues
But the successes are also confirmation that the change that has been initiated – however rocky it may be at times – is also bearing fruit in terms of sport. “The results show that a lot is going well in Magglingen and in the regional performance centers,” says Huser. “And it is also confirmation for the athletes that the road is good.”
A lot has changed and initiated in the past two years. But the process is not over yet, there are still problems, especially for women. The fact that Lena Bickel has obtained a ticket for the Olympic Games in Paris is at least a ray of hope.
The next step is to introduce a new financing concept. This should guarantee that STV can keep pace with the world’s best in the future. With Florian Langenegger and Luca Giubellini, two twenty-year-olds were part of the team in Antwerp. The sporting prospects for the STV are also quite good after Paris 2024…
