Why the special investigator is interested in Rudy Giuliani’s alcohol problem Master of the Dark Arts – you can now study magic at a British university

The former mayor’s alcohol addiction could become a problem for the former president.

It’s an open secret that Rudy Giuliani and alcohol have a close relationship. A glass of whiskey is pretty much standard equipment for him. He is also known to not just sip it. In the relevant clubs in New York or at the bar of the Trump Hotel in Washington, colleagues signal the waiter when Rudy has quenched his thirst again. Which rarely helps: embarrassing performances in an obviously drunken state have become commonplace for Rudy.

But why is the special representative now interested in Giuliani’s alcohol problem? Several sources report that Jack Smith has interviewed witnesses on this subject. Matt Flegenheimer and Maggie Haberman explain what this means in a detailed report in the New York Times:

“Trump’s defense team is seeking redemption in a ‘we relied on the advice of our lawyers’ strategy, a strategy that portrays their client as someone who only followed the advice of his lawyers. However, if this advice came from someone who was clearly drunk, and especially when many others were simultaneously telling Trump he had lost, then this is a weak argument.”

Brief explanation: When Trump’s original lead on election night melted away like a snowball in hell, Giuliani advised him to go in front of the cameras and declare himself the winner, which Trump did. However, the former mayor of New York was extremely drunk at the time, as Jason Miller, a close advisor of the ex-president, testified before the Commission of Inquiry on January 6, 2021. As is known, Trump himself does not drink alcohol. It is said that he often made fun of Giuliani’s addiction.

Giuliani’s drinking is a public joke and a personal tragedy. The reason may be that the former mayor is a very insecure person. Giuliani comes from a humble background. He is the son of Italian immigrants; his father was even in prison for theft and assault.

Rudy studied law at New York University. He quickly earned a reputation as a fearless mob hunter in the Southern District of New York, America’s toughest law enforcement agency. In 1994, he became mayor of New York and consistently implemented his law and order course. He managed to turn the apparently ungovernable metropolis into a thriving city again.

Giuliani eventually became “Mayor of America” after the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. He immediately went to the scene, encouraged the people and helped with the rescue efforts.

Giuliani was at the peak of his career. After his second term, he earned money as a lawyer and consultant – and he spent it with both hands. He offered apartments in prime locations, memberships to exclusive clubs and, above all, the most expensive hobby a man can have: divorces. Rudy married three times. His monthly expenses are reportedly around $200,000.

Rudy’s desire for recognition is on par with Trump’s. In November 2006, he wanted to end his career by going to the White House. Seduced by the good numbers in the early polls, he entered the primaries late and crashed brutally. In January 2008, he meekly withdrew his candidacy and went to Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida residence, to relax.

Now Giuliani’s alcohol career began to take serious shape. His then wife Judith later said he had fallen into a deep depression. His biographer Andrew Kirztman explains that Rudy repeatedly passed out while drunk.

With Trump’s candidacy for president, the camera-hungry Giuliani suddenly found a job again. Although the two were never really close friends, the former mayor threw himself into the battle for the real estate magnate. He again became a man in demand and was allowed to appear in front of the cameras of Fox News and other conservative media almost every day.

When Trump finally managed to enter the White House, Giuliani was also experiencing his second spring. Although he did not get the cabinet position he hoped for – he is said to have flirted with the position of secretary of state – he was part of Trump’s inner circle as a personal lawyer. In that role, he was the driving force behind the effort to weaponize the Hunter Biden Ukraine story against Joe Biden. That went wrong and the result was the first impeachment proceedings against Trump.

Giuliani’s efforts to prove the Big Lie — the theory that Biden’s election victory was stolen — were even more devastating. It was a debacle. In more than sixty cases, Giuliani and his colleagues were derided by judges, including conservative judges. They couldn’t provide any evidence to support the Big Lie.

Giuliani’s performance was now hard to beat in terms of embarrassment. He once invited journalists to a press conference at the Four Seasons, a luxury hotel chain. But his staff confused the address with ‘Four Seasons Landscape’, a landscaping company. The surprised journalists found themselves in a parking lot in front of a porn store. During another press conference, Giuliani had hair oil running down his cheeks, and during another he audibly farted.

Giuliani had finally become a laughing stock. For the pathological narcissist, this can be painful. The legal and financial consequences of his actions will likely hurt him even more. In Georgia, he is one of 19 defendants in the trial against Trump & Co. Special investigator Jack Smith describes him as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the trial of Trump for his role in the storming of the Capitol. This also means that Giuliani could be brought before the police by the special investigator at any time.

Financially, Giuliani has already had to pay $132,000 in damages for defaming two election workers in Georgia. He had accused the two of manipulating the elections without any evidence. And this is just the beginning; the amount of this compensation is likely to increase significantly. To do this, Giuliani must fight a lawsuit brought by voting machine manufacturer Dominion. This will involve very large sums of money. Fox News was ordered to pay Dominion $787 million in the same case.

Giuliani, 79, is broke. His apartment in New York is for sale. His lawyer has sued him for $1.3 million in outstanding fees. His income is minimal. He hardly has any friends anymore. Lonely in his apartment, he writes his podcasts every day that no one wants to listen to anymore. His prospects are bleak. The former ‘mayor of the nation’ should expect to spend the few years he has left in prison.
