There was a police operation at the house of AfD politician Alice Weidel in Einsiedeln SZ. The background was a “security-related incident”, as a party spokesperson explained to the dpa news agency. Schwyz police confirmed the operation.

According to several media reports, Weidel and her family were taken from their private apartment to a safe place by security authorities as evidence of an attack on her family grew.

On the Day of German Unity on October 3, Weidel canceled a performance in Germany due to security concerns. “Out of an abundance of caution,” she did not speak publicly on Tuesday, the party spokesman said. Weidel therefore did not participate as planned in an AfD event for the Bavarian state elections in Mödlareuth, Bavaria-Thuringia. It remained unclear how long Weidel would refrain from public appearances.

The CDU and CSU had invited people to a meeting on the Day of German Unity. Numerous counter-protesters from the AfD rally also stood up for democracy and cosmopolitanism and against right-wing extremism. According to the Upper Franconia police station and the Thuringia police, everything was quiet until the afternoon. According to the information, a total of 5,000 to 6,000 people came to the site.

The Federal Criminal Police (BKA), which is responsible for the personal protection of politicians, told the AFP news agency that the cancellation of Weidel’s participation in the event on Tuesday was “not at the instigation or recommendation of the BKA”.
