German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has introduced stationary border controls.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (53) has explained the introduction of temporary stationary border controls in Germany with an increase in the number of migrants being smuggled into the country. “We have now discovered that every fourth refugee who comes to Germany comes through smugglers,” Faeser said on Wednesday in the ZDF “Morgenmagazin”. The temporary stationary checks complement the ongoing fog research.

To support the municipalities in the short term, Faeser, the SPD’s top candidate in the state elections in the state of Hesse this Sunday, called on the states to pass on all appropriate federal resources. Last year, only 71 percent of these funds were passed on, according to Faeser. In the longer term, registration procedures at the EU’s external borders would also “change a lot” and thus contribute to easing the burden in Germany.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior announced temporary controls at the German border last week. In view of the increasing number of arrivals in Slovakia, stationary border controls have been taking place at the border with neighboring countries Austria, Poland and the Czech Republic since midnight on Wednesday.
