Bus falls from bridge in Venice – at least 20 dead and many injured MEPs not yet satisfied with new EU climate commissioner

A tragic accident occurred in the Mestre district of Venice on Tuesday evening. At least twenty people were killed in the accident, according to the Ansa news agency.

As Ansa reports, the natural gas bus went off an elevated road, landed on the railroad tracks next to the road and caught fire. There are many firefighters, ambulances and police officers on site.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her dismay after the bus accident. “My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends. “I am in close contact with Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to follow the news of this tragedy,” Meloni said in a statement.

Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro spoke of a “terrible tragedy” that struck his city in the evening. “An apocalyptic scene, there are no words,” Brugnaro said in a post on the online platform X (formerly Twitter).

The railway line between Mestre on the mainland and the lagoon city of Venice was interrupted. The exact circumstances of the accident – including whether the vehicle was a tourist bus – are still unclear. (lst/sda)
