The Republican leader of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, is on the brink. Things are looking increasingly bad for McCarthy after a Republican representative filed a motion for his resignation.
On Tuesday, the House of Congress voted against a motion to dismiss an impeachment motion against McCarthy in a procedural vote. This allows a vote to be taken on the original proposal of McCarthy’s party rival Matt Gaetz, who wants to have the chairman removed from office.
Right-wing hardliner Gaetz, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, filed a motion Monday evening to remove McCarthy from office. The background is the dispute over the budget freeze that was averted at the last minute last weekend. McCarthy had agreed with Democrats in the House of Representatives on a compromise to fund US federal authorities until November 17 to avoid a so-called shutdown.
Gaetz, who is pushing for massive budget cuts, has sharply criticized McCarthy for this. He also accuses McCarthy of reaching a “secret” deal with President Joe Biden on new aid to Ukraine. In American history, no leader of the House of Representatives has ever been voted out of office because of an impeachment motion. (AFP)
