Parts of Peru’s famous Inca ruin city of Machu Picchu are currently closed to visitors. The Ministry of Culture cited the erosion of several stone structures in the tourist attraction as a result of the large number of visitors.
“The damage is irreversible. We must protect our heritage,” said a ministry representative in the nearby city of Cusco. Therefore, some areas should be closed for maintenance work.
The areas of the Inca site affected by the closures include the Sun Temple, the Temple of the Condor and the ritual stone sacred to the Incas, the so-called Intihuatana.
Machu Picchu is visited by as many as 3,800 people every day. The tourist attraction in southeastern Peru was built in the 15th century on a mountain ridge at an altitude of 2,500 meters and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1981. (sda/afp)
