A German holidaymaker was seriously injured after falling from a sixth-floor hotel balcony in Mallorca. The accident took place on Friday morning in Playa de Palma, as the digital newspaper “Crónica Balear” and other regional media reported, citing the authorities of the Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea. The Samur Rescue Service confirmed this information to the German Press Agency upon request. A hospital spokesperson said the young man was in critical condition. The German is in mortal danger.
The fall occurred around 7:30 am. It remained unclear how the incident initially occurred. It is believed that the young man was drunk, wanted to get some fresh air and lost his balance. According to reports, he had returned from a long night of partying to the hotel, which is just two blocks from Ballermann Beach, shortly before the fall. The police started an investigation.
Balcony use leads to fatal falls every year
A blow to the fifth-floor balcony slowed the fall somewhat, wrote ‘Crónica Balear’. The German was thrown into the courtyard. Some hotel guests were awakened by the dull thud of the crash. Despite the serious injuries, the German did not lose consciousness. A hotel employee provided first aid before emergency services arrived. Friends of the accident victim were deeply affected, it was said.
Fatal balcony falls occur almost every year in Mallorca. The phenomenon is known as ‘balconing’. The victims are usually young holidaymakers who either jump from the balcony into a swimming pool to test their courage, or have locked themselves out and want to enter the room through the balcony. Drunk people often lose their balance. (An)
