He must make the German football summer fairytale possible at the European Championships at home in 2024: 36-year-old Julian Nagelsmann, officially the new national coach from next Friday.
It will be presented at a DFB press conference at 12 noon. The young coach from Upper Bavaria succeeds Hansi Flick (58). He was sacked on September 10, a day after the 1–4 friendly defeat to Japan. Two days later, interim sports director Rudi Völler (63) led the DFB team to a 2-1 victory in the test against second world champions France.
In the DFB statement, the new head coach is quoted as saying: “I subordinate everything to the fact that I have a great tournament in a great country. I really want to take on this challenge.” He attaches “huge significance” to the European Championships in Germany and promises to be a “close-knit group” until then.
The DFB management is also pleased to introduce the 36-year-old. “We are convinced that, as national coach, Julian Nagelsmann will ensure that the national team inspires its fans and that the European Championship will also be a sporting success,” says chairman Bernd Neuendorf. Rudi Völler also confirms that the ex-Bayern coach was the preferred candidate for the position “when the search began.” “He is not only an absolute football expert, but has already proven in all his positions that he can motivate and inspire a team and the entire environment.”
Bavaria pays well over a million
Nagelsmann worked in the Bundesliga as a coach at Hoffenheim, Leipzig and Bayern. In Munich he surprisingly had to leave at the end of March 2023 – a blessing for the DFB. Nagelsmann’s coaching team consists of Sandro Wagner (35) and Benjamin Glück (37), who already worked with Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim, Leipzig and Bayern Munich.
As “Bild” reports, Nagelsmann earns around 400,000 euros per month as national coach – which is considerably less than his salary at Bayern. To terminate his contract, which runs until 2026, the record champions will pay him a severance package of over one million in return.
The first German appearance with Nagelsmann on the sidelines will take place on October 14 in Hartford (US state of Connecticut) against the US. Mexico will be the opponent in Philadelphia (US state of Pennsylvania) on October 18. (yap/sbe)
