According to media reports, former US President Donald Trump also wants to stay away from the Republicans’ second televised debate on the 2024 US presidential election. Instead, he plans to travel to Detroit next Wednesday and deliver a speech to members of the US auto union , CNN and the New York Times and other media reported on Tuesday. Trump had made it clear in the past that he did not need to participate in the debate because of his lead in the polls.
The influential UAW union is currently on strike at the three major American car manufacturers General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. “Every fiber of our union is being used to fight the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donald Trump at the expense of workers,” UAW President Shawn Fain said in response to news of Trump’s possible plan, obtained by CNN .
The second televised debate between the Republican presidential candidates will take place on Wednesday evening (local time) in Simi Valley, California. Trump had already stayed away from the first debate a few weeks ago. His boycott of the second TV debate came as no surprise.
Trump wants to move into the White House for the second time after the presidential elections in 2024. Anyone who wants to become the Republican presidential candidate must first win the primaries in the individual states. For the Republicans, voters in Iowa will first decide on their favorite candidate on January 15. Trump currently leads by a wide margin in internal party polls. (sda/dpa)
