There are 206 people on the luxury cruise ship Ocean Explorer – and help is far away. The ship ran aground in a remote area of eastern Greenland. According to the Danish army, the ship was initially unable to free itself. The Ocean Explorer is now moored in a fjord – about 1,400 kilometers northeast of the capital Nuuk.
Arctic Command head Brian Jensen explains: “The nearest help is far away, our units are far away and the weather can be very unfavorable.” There is currently no knowledge of any injuries.
The nearest Arctic Command unit was approximately 1,200 nautical miles (about 2,200 kilometers) away at the time of the incident. The result: The passengers and crew of the Ocean Explorer will have to wait until at least Friday morning (local time). (bab)
