Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy (58), supports investigations into possible impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden (80). There are credible allegations that Biden was involved in his son’s illegal businesses, McCarthy said in Washington on Tuesday. “These are allegations of abuse of power, cover-up and corruption and they warrant further investigation,” McCarthy said.
The Republican now wants to get a majority of his party’s members in the House of Representatives behind him to start the investigation. It remains to be seen whether this will happen and whether a so-called impeachment procedure can be opened in a next step.
In any case, the other chamber of Congress, the Senate, would have to decide on a possible impeachment of the president. Biden’s Democrats have a slim majority there. The possibility that the president will ultimately be found guilty and removed from office has so far been ruled out. (SDA/bab)
