A German zookeeper died at the hands of a rhino at the Salzburg zoo, and another person suffered serious injuries. A police spokesperson told the Austrian news agency APA on Tuesday: “A nurse died and a second person was seriously injured.”
Zookeeper feeds rhinos and dies during attack at Salzburg Zoo
The incident occurred during actual routine work at the rhino enclosure: apparently the 33-year-old zookeeper was feeding the rhinos when an animal attacked the woman. Her husband rushed to help the 33-year-old. The man was also seriously injured when he tried to chase the animal away, as a police spokesperson from the Salzburg State Police confirmed to the Bavaria media group.
The 34-year-old Austrian worked – like his wife – as a caretaker at the zoo, reports ‘PNP’. It is not yet clear why the animal suddenly attacked.
The gates will remain closed for the time being
According to consistent media reports from Austria, the officers have been on duty since 7am. According to the company’s Facebook page, the zoo will remain closed for the time being.
