Britain returns to the EU research program Horizon Europe. The British government and the European Commission announced this on Thursday. (icon image)

Britain was excluded from Horizon in 2020. The move was taken in response by the European Commission to London’s unilateral action in the dispute over the special Brexit rules for Northern Ireland. Now that a solution had been found for Northern Ireland, the way was clear for Britain to join Horizon.

“Horizon Europe” (2021-2027) is an EU funding program for research and innovation with a budget of over €95 billion.

Unlike Great Britain, Switzerland remains excluded from ‘Horizon Europe’. Because Brussels does not want to negotiate Horizon with Switzerland until substantial progress has been made in talks on institutional issues.
