This propaganda show could still take revenge on Moscow: the state broadcaster “Rossiya 1” has extensively reported on the expansion of air defenses for the Russian capital – and possibly released valuable information. The number and positions of the guns can be deduced from the recordings.
These two Pantsir S-1 guns were apparently deployed west of Moscow since June at a facility under construction.
“No wonder they used this position for their propaganda, it is only ten kilometers from Putin’s headquarters in Novo-Ogaryovo,” reports Radio Free Europe journalist Mark Krutov, who reports on Moscow’s air defenses on X (formerly Twitter).
The following shot, distributed by “Rossiya 1,” can also be easily located based on the prominent tower in the background, Krutov said.
A Pantsir gun was also placed on the platform of the tower. With this measure, the leadership in Moscow is apparently responding to the increasing attacks with kamikaze drones. Moscow is now regularly hit by the slow and low-flying projectiles.
The Russian air defenses were overwhelmed
So far, Russian air defenses have been unable to counter the attacks. Even with cardboard drones, the Ukrainians and their allies are harassing the Russian army. The elevated position of the weapons should also be a response to the new threat.
Because the drones fly very low, they can hide in the radar shadows, which are created by buildings, hills and forests, for example. On the other hand, a Pantsir gun’s radar can better detect low-flying objects from an elevated position.
Why are they doing this?
Relatively simple: by positioning the Pantsir S-1, the radar sees farther and has fewer radar shadows for low-flying drones to hide behind.

Ukrainian kamikaze drones from own development
It remains to be seen whether the new positions will be able to stop the drone attacks on Moscow. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has invested heavily in the development of kamikaze drones, and several of its own developments are already up and running. In total, more than a hundred Ukrainian companies are said to be involved in the development of unmanned aerial vehicles.
