A supermarket in Austria had to close for three days.

A supermarket in the Austrian city of Krems an der Donau has had to go without customers for more than three days after seeing a large spider in a banana box.

The retail group Rewe announced on Friday that the store would reopen during the day after “extensive detection, security and cleaning measures” had been taken. However, the animal was not found.

Store has been cleaned and disinfected

Before the store opened on Tuesday, according to the local fire department, a supermarket employee reported seeing a four-inch spider with a black and red pattern opening a banana box. Emergency services then removed all the bananas. Then all other fresh food was sorted and the store was cleaned and sanitized.

Despite several days of work by officials, firefighters, spider experts and cleaning experts, no spider was found. The spider species had also not been identified, Rewe said. After the extensive measures, it can be ruled out that such an animal is still in the store. (SDA)
