Wildfires in North African Algeria have killed 34 people. According to the Algerian interior ministry, 24 civilians and 10 soldiers were among the dead late Monday night.
About 8,000 rescue workers were deployed to extinguish the fires. They raged on Monday in the Algerian region of Beni Ksila, east of the capital Algiers. About 1,500 people were taken to safety in villages. The strong winds quickly spread the flames to other parts of the country.
Neighboring Tunisia also suffered fires on Monday and a heat wave that spread over large parts of the country. In the capital Tunis it was 48 degrees Celsius. In forests near the Algerian border, firefighters fought the fires that had been raging there for several days. According to media reports, some 2,500 people have been brought to safety. Several people suffered heat stroke and were taken to hospitals.
