Larger wildfires and forest fires broke out on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily on Tuesday night. The north and Palermo and the surrounding area are particularly affected.
A large fire in the hills around the island’s capital reached the airport grounds early Tuesday morning. The airport will therefore remain temporarily closed until 11 a.m., the operator announced on Twitter on Tuesday. Several flights have already been canceled or diverted. The A29 motorway was also affected – three slip roads were closed.
In Palermo and the surrounding province, firefighters say they have 30 teams on hand to fight the numerous fires. Photos and videos showed the fires blazing menacingly in the distance.
Local media reported that a hospital was also threatened – however, according to the fire brigade, the fire there is under control. According to the “Rai” station, 1,500 people in the area had to be evacuated.
