The Greek coastguard has picked up nearly 100 migrants in the Mediterranean. In addition, three men have been arrested as suspected smugglers, the state radio reported on Saturday, citing the coast guard.
Smugglers continue to try to take migrants across the Mediterranean to EU countries. In mid-June several hundred people were killed when a completely overcrowded fishing boat sank about 50 nautical miles off the Greek coast.
According to the coastguard, 71 migrants were spotted on Friday aboard a sailing boat off the Aegean island of Karpathos. They were probably on their way to Italy from Turkey.
27 people have been rescued from a boat off the island of Rhodes. Greece now wants to house them in an application center on the island of Kos. (cst/sda/dpa)
