As reported by the Brazilian Public Safety Forum (FBSP), in 2022, a total of 74,930 rapes were reported in the countryt – an 8.2 percent increase from 2021. More than 60 percent of the victims were therefore younger than 14 years.

FBSP compiled the report using data from police records and other official documents. As a result, more than ten percent of victims were under the age of four and almost 70 percent of rapes took place in the victims’ homes.

Corona connected victims and attackers

According to FBSP coordinator Juliania Martins, the increase in rapes was also related to Corona. “During the Covid 19 pandemic, schools were closed for a long time and victims were trapped with their attackers,” she told AFP. Since a large number of rapes go unreported, it is “quite possible that the situation is even worse”.

According to the NGO, there were 1,437 femicides in Brazil last year, a 6.1 percent increase from 2021. (saw/sda/afp)
