Russian propagandists regularly make baseless claims. Now they are talking about a conflict with Turkey.

Russian propaganda is again spreading alarming messages, this time warning of an alleged Turkish attack. Propagandists are calling on Russia to prepare for a conflict with Turkey. They have no evidence for this, but the reasons for the escalation of propaganda could lie in the increasing distance from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

In recent weeks, his actions had increasingly turned him away from Russia. Erdoğan facilitated Sweden’s entry into NATO, advocated Ukraine’s entry into NATO, released high-ranking Ukrainian officers despite a corresponding agreement with Russia and, according to reports, wants to supply Ukraine with Turkish self-propelled howitzers.

In addition, Erdoğan again campaigned for the extension of the grain agreement between Russia and Ukraine, which requires Russia to continue to allow Ukraine to export grain across the Black Sea. Russia seems unenthusiastic about Erdoğan’s growing distance and rejected an extension of the agreement on Monday.

Propagandist Vladimir Solovyov and Duma deputy Semyon Bagdasarov spoke on Russian state television about relations with Turkey. “Turkey is an imperial state with an imperial history,” Solovyov declared. Bagdasarov then claims: “They want to use the situation that has arisen to take back areas they believe are theirs.” This is not only the South Caucasus, but also “our North Caucasus, the Black Sea coast and the Crimea.” Bagdasarov says Russia must act now.

The story does not mention that Russia itself annexed Crimea in 2014 in violation of international law. Moreover, the claim of the Russian propagandists cannot be confirmed. Such statements are not known to come from Turkey or the Turkish president.
