Climate activists have occupied a parking garage in Frankfurt, Germany, since Friday.

Preaching water and drinking wine: that is currently being accused by young climate protectors who have occupied one of the largest parking garages in the German city of Frankfurt since Friday. They demanded that cars be banned from the city.

The problem: the activists drove to the “Fridays for Future” demo in several cars. That reports “Bild”.

“For some things you need a car”

Since Friday, about 40 squatters have gathered in the parking garage to demonstrate for a car-free city center. They wanted to express their concerns with slogans such as ‘sell cars’.

The chaotic climax seems to see no problem in driving old combustion engines such as a VW bus, a VW Caddy and a Honda Jazz to the demo.

“We are against the car and use the car, that’s okay. We cannot separate everything here. You need cars for some things,” said a demonstrator when approached by Stefan Naas (49), FDP member of the state parliament for the state of Hesse.

When asked why they didn’t come up with electric cars, one activist replied, “We can’t afford them.”

Parking garage belongs to a hospital

The climate activists brought plants and soil into the parking lot with the cars, creating a small park, reports “Bild”. They would also have carried earthen containers in the cars to build a fence at the driveway and tents to protect themselves from the sun.

The activists were also equipped with plastic boxes, tetrapacks, Bunsen burners and ready meals. Again, they don’t seem to take their own demands too seriously.

The climate activists are also not interested that the parking garage in question is the visitor and patient parking lot of the Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen hospital.

The behavior of the activists irritates the FDP politician: “You are all illegally occupying the parking garage!”

The activists declined his offer to help them pack their belongings. ‘We clean up ourselves, load it into our cars. We know where, what needs to be in the cars.”

Climate activists, whose lifestyles do not match their demands, are always a source of controversy. Recently, a flight to Mexico by Max Voegtli (30), climate activist at Renovate Switzerland, provoked violent reactions. (dzc)
