This year’s British Grand Prix saw a rather awkward encounter between British Formula 1 commentator Martin Brundle (64) and actress Cara Delevingne (30) at Silverstone. Instead of an interview, the Brit gave the moderator a basket in front of the camera.
Brundle, who made a name for himself in motorsport as a commentator and reporter after ending his own Formula 1 career, approached Delevingne on the grid on Sunday and introduced himself as presenter for Sky F1. She, on the other hand, avoided an interview and answered him several times with “No”, not wanting to answer any questions. Even Brundle’s suggestion that anyone in the starting area with a VIP pass should be open for an interview failed to entice her into conversation. “I’m sure it would have been extremely interesting,” Brundle said sarcastically as he said goodbye to Delevingne.
Delevingne fights back
Opinions about the incident are divided on social media. Delevingne and other celebrities, including actor Brad Pitt (59), “Black Widow” star Florence Pugh (27) and musician Sam Ryder (34), received VIP passes and access to the starting area. While Sam Ryder, who came second for the UK in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, has been praised for his enthusiasm when speaking to Brundle, Delevingne’s behavior angers many. It has been called rude and a majority believe that a public figure who does not want to give interviews at the start of a Formula 1 race should also not be given a VIP pass.
However, the actress is also protected. Some Twitter users claim that the live broadcast clearly shows the Formula 1 representative standing by shaking his head and saying “no” when Brundle approaches Delevingne.
