A young man who wanted to kill Queen Elizabeth II was inspired by the ‘Star Wars’ films, according to the prosecution.
The 21-year-old wanted to create a new empire and therefore targeted the Queen as “the figurehead of the royal family,” prosecutor Alison Morgan said in court in London on Wednesday. His thinking is partly influenced by the fantasy world of “Star Wars”. Despite his repeated references to science fiction characters, Morgan said the defendant knew the difference between reality and fiction.
The man is charged with violating the Treason Act of 1842 and carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. The verdict will be announced this Thursday.
The man pleaded guilty to planning an attack on the Queen on December 25, 2021. He had entered the grounds of Windsor Castle with a loaded crossbow and was soon overpowered by security forces. “I’m here to kill the Queen,” he said when he was arrested. The late Queen was staying at Windsor Castle at the time.
According to the prosecution, the then 19-year-old was seeking revenge for the Amritsar massacre in 1919. At the time, British colonial troops opened fire on protesters in the Indian city of Amritsar, killing hundreds. In a video he sent to acquaintances, the man said he was an Indian Sikh and announced that he wanted to kill the Queen. (sda/dpa)
