On Saturday in Kiev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy spoke hurtfully about how to end the war.

Kiev is ready to talk about the terms of ending the war if Ukrainian forces gain control of internationally recognized borders. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy (45) said this on Saturday at a press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez (51) in Kiev.

Ukraine expressly wants Crimea back before peace talks with Moscow are considered. Russia illegally annexed the peninsula in March 2014.

Back to the end of the Soviet era

According to Zelensky, Ukraine is not only interested in retaking the areas it controlled before the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, including the Donbass and the regions of Zaporizhia and Kherson.

Ukraine is also striving to restore its full original size, which it enjoyed after the collapse of the Soviet empire in 1991.

2022 “line of action” not the end goal

Selenski calls the borders a “line of action” at the outbreak of war on February 24. Therefore, he “emphasizes” again, Zelensky said in response to a journalist’s question, “Ukraine will be ready for any kind of diplomacy when we are really at our borders, at our real borders according to international law.”

Selenski is referring to the Russian-Ukrainian border that was recognized under international law on August 24, 1991, when independence was achieved. (kes)
