The head of the heart clinic at the University Hospital in Zurich, Paul Vogt, was suspected of causing the death of a patient. An anonymous group had filed a complaint against the doctor.

As the new head of the heart clinic, he must bring peace to the University Hospital Zurich (USZ). But then heart surgeon Paul Vogt (66) himself became the target of a vicious attack. He was accused of being responsible for the death of a senior at USZ in 2020. After a laborious operation, he suffered a life-threatening complication – Vogt was not at home at the time as he had been called to an emergency. Therefore, in the end, the senior died, and Vogt was to blame for the death.

Behind the bad accusation was an anonymous group. The prosecutor’s office charged him with manslaughter through negligence. With the result: The suspicion was unfounded, according to the “Tagesanzeiger”. A report from a German medical professor made it clear that the senior would have died even if Vogt had been in the operating room. No one could have saved the man’s life. But Vogt’s reputation was already damaged. And it was not an isolated case.

Criminal prosecution of document forgery and data corruption

Research by the “Tagesanzeiger” shows that Vogt is not the only victim of defamation by anonymous perpetrators. The association, which calls itself “Honest Falcon”, targeted another USZ employee.

The background was allegations made in 2019 against Vogt’s predecessor, Francesco Maisano (56). In charge was a senior physician who worked at the heart clinic under Maisano. The doctor gave the hospital board a file. It contained a list of allegations against his boss. Maisano allegedly put his interests before the health of the patients when implants were implanted and made false statements to the authorities. The USZ filed a criminal complaint for forgery and data corruption, Maisano was suspended.

“Honest Falcon” shot at the whistleblower doctor – and instead accused him of screwing up as a doctor: “I see him killing patients every day,” says an email sent to people from Zurich’s political landscape. Maisano is innocent and the best man for the job. Explosive: At the time, the public had no idea about the affair. “Honest Falcon” also tried to exploit politics. The case against the heart boss was eventually dropped after extensive investigation.

Details from the OP report ended up in the “Weltwoche”

But since Maisano was already on leave, interim boss Paul Vogt was next to be targeted by Maisano’s supporters. Suddenly, sensitive information about the death of the deceased senior appeared in “Weltwoche”. Vogt was accused of being unavailable. Then comes the lawsuit mentioned above. It is unclear whether “Honest Falcon” was behind it. But the group may have seen an opportunity to get Maisano back to work with the campaign against Vogt.
