Two people were killed in an incident near the US consulate in the Saudi port city of Jeddah.
As the Saudi news agency SPA reported on Thursday, a man got out of the car near the consulate with a firearm in his hand and was subsequently killed in a shootout with police. SPA relied on information from the police spokesman for the Mecca region. The incident happened Wednesday night. A security guard at the Nepalese consulate was also killed, according to the report.
Authorities determined the background to the incident, it said. According to Saudi media, no US citizens were injured.
The incident happened just days before American Independence Day on July 4. A similar incident occurred several years ago, just before the American holiday. In July 2016, a suicide bomber blew himself up near the US consulate in Jeddah. The attacker died, two guards were slightly injured. (sda/dpa)
