The Federal Council has imposed sanctions on five politicians and businessmen in connection with the destabilization of Moldova. This will freeze those people’s assets. In addition, they are not allowed to enter or transit Switzerland.
At the request of Moldova, Switzerland thus joins the EU’s measures, the Federal Council announced on Wednesday. The corresponding regulation will come into force on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The sanctions are in response to acts of destabilization in Moldova, which have become more frequent since Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, it said. These came from internal groups and from Russia.
Sanctions have been imposed on people whose actions threatened Moldova’s sovereignty and independence, according to the Federal Council. With this, the Federal Council wanted to respond to the increasing undermining of democracy, the rule of law and stability in the country and reaffirm the incumbent government, he said. (sda)
