As the American news channel “CNN” reported from the courtroom in Colorado Springs (Colorado), A. received five life sentences for murder on Monday and more than 2,200 years in prison for attempted murder. The November 2022 incident also left 19 injured.

A. is 23 years old, according to the defense, identifies as non-binary, so not clearly male or female, and uses the pronouns “they” and “she”. A. had been guilty of five murders and 46 attempted murders. According to the “Colorado Springs Gazette,” more than 20 people testified in court, some calling A. a “coward” and “monster.”

In addition, there is still a possible death penalty in the room, which could be imposed at the federal level. At Monday’s news conference, officials said a federal investigation into the attack had been launched and is ongoing, according to CNN. In the state of Colorado, however, the prosecutor’s office could not demand the death penalty for the trial because it was abolished there in 2020.

According to the police, A. entered the LGBTQ club in November with an assault rifle and a pistol and immediately opened fire. According to the police, two people present at the club intervened and arrested A. The motive remained unclear.
