According to forecasts, the conservative party Nea Dimokratia (ND) has become the strongest party in Greece’s parliamentary elections on Sunday. The party of former Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis won between 40 and 44 percent of the vote, state broadcaster ERT said, according to forecasts based on voter surveys. The largest opposition party, the left-wing Syriza led by party leader Alexis Tsipras, would receive 16 to 19 percent of the vote.
Since the strongest party will receive at least 20 extra seats in the 300-member parliament under electoral law, the Conservatives will probably be able to form the future government with a comfortable majority.
The social-democratic Pasok (forecast: between 10 and 13 percent), the Greek Communist Party KKE (forecast: between 7 and 9 percent) and the ultra-national Spartiate Party, which has between 4 and 6 percent, also have the three percent. hurdle to enter parliament are predicted.
The right-wing populist party Elliniki Lisi (forecast: between 2.3 and 4.3 percent) has yet to worry about the three percent threshold, as has the Mera25 party of former left-wing finance minister Giannis Varoufakis. The ultra-Orthodox party Niki could still enter parliament with 2.3 to 4.3 percent in the course of the evening. This also applies to the radical left party Plefsi Eleftherias. (sda/dpa)
