The riots broke out after an attack in the West Bank in which two militant Palestinians shot dead four Israelis on Tuesday. News site ynet reported on Friday that settlers have set up seven new outposts in response to the killing.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had already announced the accelerated construction of about 1,000 apartments in the region after the attack. “Our response to terrorism is to fight it with all our might and build our country,” his agency said in a statement. US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides criticized the settlers who set fire to dozens of vehicles and homes. The United States does not dwell on such violence. He also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the attack.

At a rally in Egypt in March, Israelis and Palestinians pledged to suspend “unilateral measures” for three to six months. According to Egypt’s foreign ministry, Israel pledged not to hold discussions about building new settlements in the West Bank for four months and not to approve any new outposts for six months.

During the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Today, nearly 600,000 Israelis live in more than 200 settlements. In 2016, the UN Security Council labeled these settlements a violation of international law and called on Israel to halt all settlement activity. The Palestinians want to establish their own states in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem. (sda/dpa)
