A ship salvage expert is certain that the debris field discovered during the search for the “Titan” is from the missing submarine. Speaking to broadcasters BBC and Sky News on Thursday, David Mearns referred to statements made by the Explorers Club president in a WhatsApp group. Researchers are united in the association and two ‘Titan’ prisoners are also members. Mearns said the so-called landing frame and tailgate of the submarine can be seen. There was initially no independent confirmation of this.
The US Coast Guard had previously announced that a diving robot had encountered a debris field in the area of operations near the wreckage of the “Titanic”. Experts are now evaluating the information, the authority tweeted without providing further information.
The submarine has been missing since Sunday morning (local time). The “Titan” was on its way with five people on board to the wreck of the “Titanic” that sank in 1912 at a depth of approximately 3800 meters. (sda/dpa)
